Captivating Catnip

Picture
Catnip Plant
Catnip, a perennial herb of the mint family, is a well-known treat for cats although about 50% of cats don't react to catnip, as well as most kittens. When it affects a cat, it makes him act hyper and crazy. The average catnip "high" lasts six minutes. Fresh catnip has the strongest effect.
The reason cats react so strongly to catnip, is because of the scent. It's caused by nepetalactone, a hallucinogenic compound. Even "big" cats like catnip.
Catnip seeds are very tiny, like coarse black pepper.  A catnip plant can grow from 3-4 ft high. Thankfully, the catnip plant is completely safe and harmless, and is not addictive to cats
